An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Building Surveyor based in Bristol, Cardiff, Wales or Manchester, offering the flexibility of remote working. This role is ideal for someone with a genuine passion for conservation and the preservation of historic buildings. 

We’re seeking an experienced Chartered Surveyor with expertise in building conservation to join a specialist team focused on the repair, restoration, and adaptive reuse of listed and heritage properties. You’ll manage a diverse portfolio of projects, often involving buildings affected by insured events, with values ranging from £50k to £5m.

 
About the Role:
You'll be responsible for overseeing the repair and restoration of heritage buildings, working independently or collaboratively with fellow building professionals depending on project scale and complexity. You'll ensure all work complies with relevant legislation, including the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, and liaise with local planning authorities, Historic England (or equivalents), and other stakeholders.
 
Surveying activities will include:
  • Technical reporting
  • Defect diagnosis
  • Preparing Schedules of Works
  • Contract administration
  • Project management
Empathy and professionalism are essential, particularly when supporting clients who have experienced significant loss. You'll also need to manage competing priorities, work to tight deadlines, and demonstrate sound judgement under pressure.
 
This is a role for someone who is passionate about protecting historic buildings, thrives on leading complex conservation projects, and values both technical detail and human impact.
 
Key Requirements:
  • Full UK driving licence (essential - travel is required)
  • Excellent communication skills - written and verbal, including the ability to clearly explain technical details and negotiate with stakeholders
  • Strong knowledge of traditional construction methods, conservation principles, and relevant legislation
  • Chartered status (MRICS or MCIOB preferred) or actively working towards chartered qualification
  • Proven experience with listed buildings, conservation areas, and heritage assets
Desirable (but not essential):
  • Experience using Apple devices or other tablets for surveying tasks
